Jared Stokes, a student at New Saint Andrews College (NSA), has a unique part-time job. He is a contributor to The Daily Caller, the news organization founded by Tucker Carlson.
Editors offer Stokes assignments — usually breaking news — that he can choose to accept or decline. Upon acceptance of a story, Stokes has an hour to research and write the article.
Stokes, an aspiring journalist from Moscow, Idaho, has written for The Daily Caller since last fall, and he is an editor for NSA’s student-run newspaper.
But Stokes is not a journalism major; he is a liberal arts and culture major, NSA’s only bachelor’s program.
It was not until his sophomore year that Stokes became interested in journalism. Stokes considered transferring to a college with a journalism or communication program, but his friends and family convinced him otherwise. Stokes sees value in continuing with his liberal arts degree.
“If I took like a journalism degree or communications, I’d be learning hard skills, just like computer engineering or coding or whatnot,” Stokes said. “But I wouldn’t have the worldview, the ability to think and the freedom that comes along with thinking well if I didn’t take liberal arts from New Saint Andrews.”
Rather, Stokes will learn the “hard skills” of journalism through programs like the WORLD Journalism Institute, a two-week course by WORLD News Group to train Christian journalists. He will also gain experience through his work at The Daily Caller.
Stokes’ aim as a journalist is to honor God, seeking His Word as the standard for objectivity. When he writes stories, his goal is to write them in a “God-serving manner.”
Recent articles for The Daily Caller include the death of the owner of the Baltimore Orioles baseball team, the arrests of drug criminals and the honoring of World War II veterans.
Stokes has so far only written print articles, but he has hobbies in photography and videography. His aim is to combine his media and writing skills into multimedia journalism.
By building his resume, Stokes hopes to work at an organization aligned with his values.
